Alfonso Bourbon is a character in the Lilydale series.
Early life Edit
His first official appearance was when he attended his fathers Proclamation as King on November 22, 1975.
In 1977, Alfonso was formally created Prince of Asturias. On his 18th birthday on May 26, 1983, Alfonso swore allegiance to the Constitution and the King fully accepting his role as successor to the Crown.
Alfonso attended a high school at Lakefield College School in Ontario, Canada and later studied Law at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He completed his academic studies by obtaining a Master of Science degree from Georgetown University where he was the roommate of his cousin, Pavlos Grecia.
As heir to the throne, a carefully regulated and structured plan was laid out for Alfonso's military training. In August 1985, a Royal Decree named Alfonso as officer at the General Military Academy in Zaragoza. He began his military training there in September where he completed his first phase of formation. By 1987, he began his air force training where he learned how to fly an aircraft. In 1989, he was promoted to lieutenant in the Army and Air Force.
On June 20, 1994; King Juan announced his intent to abdicate in Alfonso's favour. As required by the Constitution of Spain, the Spanish cabinet began deliberations the following day on an organic law to give effect to the abdication.
Alfonso ascended the throne at the stroke of midnight on June 19. Upon his accession, he became the youngest monarch in Europe.
Alfonso's bachelor years were a source of interest to the Spanish press for several years. His name was linked with several eligible women but he only had two notable girlfriends: Isabela Santorino (1984-1986). Alfonso finally began a serious relationship but nothing was suspected until the official annoucement of the Prince's engagement on November 1, 1988 to Letizia Alvarez, an award-winning television journalist. The couple were married on May 22, 1989 in the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid with representatives of royal families over the world.
